Oregon Rolls Out System to Collect Hard-to-Recycle Materials

Circular Action Alliance (CAA), the producer responsibility organization (PRO) for several states that have adopted extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs, recently opened a recycling center in Oregon for hard-to-recycle materials.

The drop-off center in Ashland, Oregon, which is an EPR state, is funded by producers of waste and will accept materials such as plastic bags, lids, plastic package handles, buckets, shredded paper, and foil.

More than 140 similar sites are expected to be built statewide, CAA says in a news release.

The facility is known as a RecycleOn Center. RecycleOn was created by CAA as part of its responsibilities to promote consumer education about the new EPR law.

The sites will collect packaging and paper materials that can’t go in recycling bins at home or work because they jam machinery or contaminate other recyclables.

“Funded by the brands that make packaging and paper products, RecycleOn shifts recycling costs away from local governments and residents—a first-of-its-kind model in the U.S.,” CAA says.
